QuestionThis past may we purchased our 1st hibiscus. it was about 12" high in a throw-away pot. We planted it and it is now 4' high, and 4' wide with large beautiful blooms. What do I have to do to prepare it for winter. Note: we live in New Jersey.
AnswerDepends on whether you are talking about a Hardy or atropical Tender Hibiscus, my friend. Hardy Hibiscus is one tough plant that needs no preparation for the cold weather. Just don't try to prune it (stimulates growth) or fertilize it (ditto) past this month and it will do fine.
Tender Hibiscus is a thirsty plant that can thrive in South Florida but nowhere norther than that. Like its northern relatives, it is an easy, undemanding plant. It blooms all winter long with very little trouble.
Please clarify and we will go into more depth on this specimen. Thanks for writing.
