Care of Cala Lillies

Question
I was given a 4" pot of cala lillies and now the leaves are gorgeous and green and getting tall, however... the flowers have drooped so very badly and I' concerned because it was a gift to me. Help, how can I perk the flowers back up? Also, is it time to repot since they've grown so tall?

Answer
Hi Robin,
Thanx for your question.  Your calla lilies are almost done blooming.  Go ahead and dead head them (remove the spent bloom).  Eventually, the leaves will shrivel up and disappear as the corm (root) begins to go dormant.  The corm needs to go dormant for about 10 weeks.  Don't cut the leaves off while they are green as the plant uses the leaves to gather energy from the sun to convert sugars and store them in the corm for next years blooming and growth.  While the corm is dormant don't water it too much but don't let the pot dry out completely.  The corm will probably remain dormant from September to January and begin blooming again.  I hope this helps.
Tom
