QuestionI live in Kansas and callas are my mothers favorite flower. I bought two potted
lillies for her to put in her yard. What do we do with them when the frost arrives. I want her to be able to enjoy them again and again
AnswerHey Imma!
I live in Kansas too! I have grown callas off and on for the past 15 years. Callas do well here but because we get rather dry in the summer, a regimen of water is required. I had a lot of non-native bulbs, corms, rhizomes and tubers I would dig up (lift) after the last frost and store them in the basement for the winter. I leave the callas outdoors until the first frost blackens the foliage and then immediately dig up the corms. Brush off (do not use water) the excess soil and allow the corms to dry in the sun for a day or two. Place the corms in some saw dust or very dry peat in a corner of a cool (not freezing), dry, dark basement. The corms will go dormant until you plant them in warm soil, some time in late April to late May depending upon your location. I hope this helps.
