QuestionI have a very large area of perennials. Daffodils are plentiful to say the least in the spring (I just bought this house). They are now past bloom and taking up much of the "view" of my other plants. A friend of mine, coils the leaves up and buries them in their spot. It does work but not only took a great deal of time but some are too bulky to bury. Do you have any other suggestion? Can I cut them back or minimize them at all? Thanks.
AnswerNEVER mess with the Daffodil leaves before they shrivel and brown and end.
They need those leaves for next year's blooms. Without them, they can't make flowers for the '08 season.
Tsk, tsk, tsk.
Don't cut, just leave them there.
Remember your other plants next year -- and move the plants or the bulbs. You can lift the Daffodils to save them but they sound like they are doing very well there. You don't know how lucky you are! I would keep them there.
I know what you mean about the early spring bulbs obstructing the later bulbs. This is why we plant the early bulbs in the back.
Sorry I can't agree with your friend -- it just ain't so.
