too late to prune?

Question
hi laura,

i live in toronto, canada. i believe that's zone 5. my question is about pruning a flowering almond shrub. it bloomed magnificently this spring whereas it did not bloom at all the past two years. i just learned recently that the proper time to prune it was right after the flowers were spent. but i didn't know that at the time so i didn't prune it. my question is whether i should prune it now in november (temp is approx 5 celsius) or should i wait until spring? thanks for your suggestions!

Answer
Debra,
If you prune it now you may not get any blooms in spring and that is your goal of course. To have beautiful spring blooms. The best time to prune IS after the blooms have faded and I would not recommend pruning it now.All spring blooming trees should be pruned right after blooms ahve come and gone and anytime BEFORE fall. That way you will know that the buds will have a chance to form before the following spring.Hope this is helpful and reinforces the rule of when to prune your almond tree.
