Hydranga Bloom

Question
I have a hydranga now for 2 yrs.  I get only 1 0r 2 flowers on it, am I doing something wrong?   It gets lots of sun and is watered.  I live in the North East so we do get harsh winters.  I do nothing with it in the fall and it looses all its leaves and then comes back beautiful in the spring just without flowers.

Answer
Hi Joan,
Thanx for your question.  If you are pruning the hydrangea in the spring this could reduce blooming.  Always prune after the plant has bloomed.  Be careful not to prune too severely has this can inhibit blooming the following year.  Feed the hydrangea with an acidic based fertilizer.  Miracid is one fertilizer that is popular but I don't think it's organic if that matters to you.  Follow the directions on the box.  The plant likes moist but not soggy soil so make sure the soil drains well and gets plenty of moisture.  You may also want to amend the soil around the shrub with some horse or cow manure for added nutrients.  A late freeze (even though it may appear light to you) can cause plants not to bloom.  Here is a link you may find helpful.  http://www.hydrangeashydrangeas.com/wont_bloom.html
