QuestionHow do you prune a Rose of Sharon to be bushy and tall, instead of just straight up? Where do you prune and when? I live in KY. Thanks
AnswerYou can prune the Rose of Sharon after it's blooming has ceased-usually in late fall. I cut any "mother branches-or big ones that grow from the baseand are 1" in diameter" almost to the ground. Do not cut more than 3 of these from any one bush. Then prune bush back in the shape you would like it to grow. Division branches will grow where you cut so take that into consideration.
I live in growing zone 5b and prune mine to about 18" in late fall.
If you have a "double-flowering" Rose of Sharon you can also prune it back if the branches get out of control during the blooming season, but once you see buds it's good not to prune.
