QuestionI have 3 good size perenial gardens but I don't really have the expertise on positioning my plants so when my gardens filled in I wasn't pleased with the way they turned out as far as their positioning. When would be the best time to dig everthing up and re-position, also I have alot of hostas and daylillies that need split and I don't know the best time to do that. I live in central Ohio. Thankyou. Gail
AnswerYour Perennials as well as your Hostas and Daylilies will be perfectly happy if you divide/transplant in early spring, just as soon as you can see them.
Use a sharp knife when cutting up the Daylilies and Hostas. Make sure there's roots for each segment. Don't worry, it will hurt you more than it hurts them.
Make sure they are well watered while they build up their root systems. A nice, big, generous dose of Bone Meal in the soil will help with that.
Ditto your Perennials. Bone Meal goes in there, too.
If you put landscape fabric down after those Perennials are moved, by the way, and throw some mulch over it, you won't have any weeds all summer long. Nothing like a weed-free garden that doesn't use chemicals.
Any questions?
