QuestionI have a hydrangea bush that is about 5 to 7 years old. It used to produce huge blue flowers. The last 2 years I have gotten few blooms and this year I got 5 huge blooms back in June and not one since. VERY sad! Please help! Also if and when should it be pruned? I live in Lancaster ,PA. Do not know what zone, sorry. Thank you for any help!
AnswerCandI have the same problem.I mistakenly cut off the old stems of my Hydrangea and it did not bloom. I have found out recently that blooms come from the old stems and therefore they should never be pruned. Also Hydrangeas are just stubborn and the reason they do not bloom from time to time is unknown. But one thing is certain.Do not trim off the old stems. The buds appear on the old stems in mid summer and then they grow rapidly and usually bloom in late summer in areas 6 to 7.Some bloom a little earlier and some a bit later. Also you could try feeding it with a bloom booster such as Miracle Gro Bloom Buster.Hope this is helpful to you.Good luck on next years bloom.I guess we will just have to be patient.
