QuestionI have about a half dozen of calla lillies growing in a small flower bed in the front of my house. This is the second year for them, where the flower was there is a green bulb looking seedy thing, should I wait any length of time and what should I do? Do i even save it. Only two of them bloomed and both have the bulbl looking thing in them. Can you help me. If they are seeds I would love to save them to plant again next year.
AnswerHi Faith,
Thanx for your question. It sounds to me like your calla lilies have produced seed pods. Allow the pod to become brown and dry and then you can remove it. You should plant the seeds in a pot of good potting soil and keep it moist and warm (70-80 degrees F). Germination is fairly quick. I've had calla lily seeds germinate in less than a month. Keep the seedlings in a sunny window unless you live in a frost-free area. If you're going to put them outside, make sure the seedlings are first put in an area where they are safe from extremes in temperature, from direct rain, hail, wind and direct sunlight for about 10 days. AFter that, they will have become acclimatized and can be put out in the garden. I hope this helps. You can also save the seeds until spring to plant. Make sure that you place the seeds in a jar and seal it and keep the jar in a cool, dry, dark place.
