Annabel Hydrangea

Question
I live in zone 4 in west central Wisconsin. I've a Annabel Hydrangea that 8 years old and is a beautiful plant.  Every March, I cut it back to 6" above the ground. The problem every year - the huge round snowballs are a lime green color.  They never, never turn white.  Is there something I can add to the soil or do to make these beautiful snowballs WHITE?
Thanks much.

Answer
Debbie,
They usually turn lime green then eventually they will turn white then mellow into a blush color. If you have it planted in deep shade that may be the reason. Also, the Hydrangea family has always been very stubborn for some reason. They never do what you expect of them. You also could try some Bloom Booster. Miracle Gro has this product out but you can buy any name brand or generic type and it will do the same thing. It brings out the blooms that are slow to come out. Also for more info go to www.google.com and type in a direct search for "Annabel Hydrangea care" and you should come up with different web sites where you may learn another method of getting them to bloom.I did a stupid thing to my big Nikko Blue hydrangea and cut off the old wood and it never bloomed.I thought I was supposed to see buds on them and didn't so I went ahead and cut the old stems. That was a no no.I learned my lesson the hard way.At least you did have blooms.I love Hydrangeas but they can be finnicky.
Good luck with your Annabel!
