what could this be

Question
I have recently moved and in my new garden I have found some new friends which are not mine, they must be the old residents.
Could you please tell me what type of plant this is...here we go

the plant has large leafs about the size of an average hand maybe a little bigger, the leafs are green with white spots ( not a disease )the leafs just began to grow out of the dirt and there are many so i left them,  I am now finding that they have one yellow flower which comes out of the middle of the plant. If this is not enough info I will give you more I am a new gardener and do not no much about this.  Thanks

Jenna

Answer
Jenna,
I was so sure it was Hosta until you got to the yellow bloom. Most Hosta blooms are white or lavender, but it may be a variety that I don't know about. There are thousands of Hosta cultivars that I can't be sure if it IS or ISN'T a Hosta, but it sounds so similar to a Hosta.Hosta have varying size leaves or "fans" and they range from hand sized to huge. The foliage colors range from speckled to striped to solid lime greens, grass greens, blue greens and even a yellow green. But you also did not give me the height of the plant or the stalk height of the bloom. It is almost impossible to identify a plant by word of mouth, believe me.I have had many questioners that tried also. They usually go searching on a nursery site or send me photos. What would help most and undoubtedly settle the identity of the plant is a photo.Do you have a digital camera that you are able to connect to your internet to email me a photo? My email address is: [email protected]. If not you can write me back for and give me a few more tidbits of the plant's habit, the way the leaves grow, the height of the plant itself and the height of the bloom stalk and a description of the bloom growth. Hostas send up stalks with the blooms carried all the way up the stalk from the center of the plant and this is their prime blooming time now here in my zone 6. You also did not give me your location.
Also go to www.google.com and look up Hostas. Then you can determine right away whether it is or is not a Hosta.
Also here are some nursery websites of places I order from that have an extensive plant data base to look for it.Good luck on your new garden.Hope you find your mystery plant!
