Hostas Need Help

Question
I started planting hostas last year and this year some came out well and some are real tiny (like 3 inches in diameter) that came out late and don't seem to grow. Since many seemed to be eaten by something (have holes in leaves), I sprayed a solution of sodium bicarbonate mised with a drop of vinegar which I have used on trees previously when they have bugs. This is the only thing I can think that is affecting the hostas since many leaves have turned orange and are getting curled up.
Any ideas whether this was coincidental(in fact I just thought about it because I could not think of anything else) or if there is something wrong with the hostas. I now have some 20 of them of different varieties such as Hosta Patriot, Fracis Williams, Golden Tiara, etc.
Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Bill,
It sounds like insects are having a heydey at your hostas. I know the feeling. I just sprayed all of mine. Go to the garden center of your choice and buy some insecticidal soap.It comes in a ready to spray formula. It is very mild and will not hurt the leaves of the Hosta at all. It will cut down on those hungry insects though.
Good luck and I hope it clears up your problem!
