Question from Va. re Delphiniums

Question
I dont know what my zone is sorry. I have a new house. The rear of the property is very sunny it has alot of sun next to a pool.  I dont know if you ever did this but in my imagination I think that because of the blueness of the pool it would be perfect having Delphiniums because theyre blue as well. The grass is nice. I looked at a catalog and Im thinking about getting them. I would like your opinion about this.

Answer
EVERYBODY loves Delphiniums.

You have the perfect conditions for them - sun sun sun sun and sun.

I think blue always looks better when you have a lot of white around it.

So here goes:

Graceful Gardens (www.gracefulgardens.com) specializes in Delphiniums.  But not just ANY Delphiniums.  They are one of the few vendors in the WORLD who obtain seed from New Zealand specialists to grow their hybrids here and sell them.  I have purchased enough that I finally bought the seed directly to grow for friends - and believe me, that's some expensive seed.  I recommend buying the plants first to see if you want to go really crazy and start growing them for everyone else.  Because these people will never give up once they get their first plant.

By the way, Delphiniums here bloom at the height of the Father's Day Season.  Blue everywhere.  That's just the most perfect accident.

I have white petunias and white sweet alyssum at the base around the border.  Everything blue looks bluer next to a sparkling white petunia.

May I recommend you also go with Larkspur, the annual flower that picks up the job when the Delphiniums fade?  Remember, Delphiniums are perennial - and they don't last forever.

Larkspur is shorter, but equally blue - they are related after all.

I also recommend vivid Blue Bachelor Buttons, Heavenly Blue Morning Glory, and Blue Lobelia, 3 other very blue annuals that will round out your blue and white pool garden.

For evening, when the sun goes down, and the blue has disappeared, why not plant some Nicotiana alata?  It's an unobtrusive greenish-white annual with a luxurious fragrance that will be perfect for anyone who wants a midnight swim.  And it won't compete at all with your other flowers visually.  It won't wreck that blue look you want to do.

All of these are available this year from Graceful Gardens.

Go pour me some iced tea -- I'll be right over.
