QuestionI bought some perennials from a farmers market - the man said it was called a buttercup - but he didn't know the "official" name. It is a beautiful yellow flower. Do you have any idea what garden stores might know this as?
Mine quit coming up and I want to replace it - but do not know what to ask for? I live in Minnesota.
AnswerHi Deb,
Thanx for your question. Buttercup is usually identified as the genus "ranunculus". Americans have tons of names for plants with which they have come into contact since the settling on this continent. There is no way to be sure without seeing the plant to know exactly what its genus and species are. At any rate, I will attempt to provide growing instructions.
Buttercups (ranunculus) prefer to grow in a woodsy atmosphere. Dappled shade, moist but well-drained soil with lots of organic matter (leaves, et.)
These plants are not commonly sold down here in the Kansas City area. We don't have a lot of woods. If you live in a woodsy area the key to growing plants native to the woods is planting them beneath trees or shrubs but in such a position which will afford them some sunlight. I hope this helps.

I would try to locate the seller and ask if s/he knows how to propagate.
I know this isn't what you were looking for. I hope this helps.
