QuestionHi Laura:
I'm a fellow Allexperts.com volunteer (Sleep Aapnea) who needs an expert! My wife and I bought our first potted hibiscus this spring and we need to know how to winter it. We live in Chicago (Yea White Sox!) and were not sure if this is the type of bush we need to take in, pot in the ground, or simply leave out on the desk for the winter. I'll appreciate any advice you can give us.
Thanks and Peace,
Dave
AnswerDave,
If it is a potted Hibiscus it is more than likely a tropical plant.Hardy Hibiscus are not suited for potting so I can assume yours is tropical, which means it can't survive outdoors in the winter.
If you have a fairly well lighted room with a sunny window or a sunroom it can easily be overwintered.
It shouldn't be watered as often because it won't need watering as much indoors.
It probably won't continue to bloom as abundantly as it did outdoors but if it has enough direct sunlight for at least 3 or 4 hours it could bloom indoors as well.
Just don't over water it and it should be just fine until the weather warms up in late spring after danger of frost is over. Then put it back outdoors and feed it regularly throughout the bloom season.
Tropical Hibiscus are gorgeous plants.Enjoy!
