QuestionI'm getting conflicting advice re: deadheading, can you help?
1. how/when/should you deadhead Shasta Daisies and Coneflowers and Black-eyed Susans?
2. i've been deadheading my various daylilies and they've been producing new sprouts/flowers. the foliage on some is starting to yellow a bit -- can I cut that yellowing foliage off or will that stop new sprouts/flowers from coming?
Tks,
Dan.
AnswerHi Dan,
Thanx for your question. When my shastas are done blooming, I cut the whole plant down to about 4 inches above the soil. Coneflowers look really messy when they're done and I do the same thing with them. The same applies to black-eyed Susans. Don't cut the foliage off of your daylilies until it is completely brown. The leaves help gather energy from the sun which is converted into starches, stored in the rhizomes for next years bloom and growth. I hope this helps.
