QuestionWe recently purchased a hydrangeaus from a nursery. After planting it seem to wilt and the center stem died, and the stalks turned black in spots. It has gotten some new growth and blossomed. My question is "are we watering it to much?" we live 40 miles northwest of Chicago, and we have had 4weeks with no rain.

AnswerHi Howard,
Thanx for your question. The hydrangea may have suffered a mild shock which trees and shrubs sometimes do when they are transplanted. If you haven't had rain for 4 weeks, the hydrangea definitely needs to be watered. At least once a week. Hydrangeas like acidic soil so you may want to get some Miracid and apply according to the directions on the box. Just make sure the soil around it doesn't stay completely dried out for too many days at a time. Like I said, about an inch of water once a week. Maybe three or 4 gallons of water a week if no regular rain. I hope this helps.
