QuestionHello Sijka,
I live in Northern Michigan (lower pennisula)and I am all new at this and I'm not sure what types of flowers would grow well up here, that would winter over (and preferably not too difficult to take care of)and also several that could attract butterflies. My 10 year old daughter loves flowers (inherited from grandma)and I would like to spend time with her doing what she likes, flower gardening. If you could help me with some ideas that would be great. Thanks for your help
Answer Hello, I'm in a hurry today and will add to my letter tomorrow.
One of the best sites for information about what plants are hardy for your area is:
http://springhillnursery.com/default.asp?sid=400286&eid=
It is Springhihll Nursery. You can search for flowers in your zone, full sun, partial sun, shade, colors.
So FIRST likd of look at that to get an idea of flowers and shrubs.
I will write to you about the soil mix that you NEED to use. 80% of your gardening success is going to be in your soil preparation (what you add to your soil). And trust me, I have put that to the test and it is TRUE!! I have a lot of clay so adding ingredients was of utmost importance.
Wil talk again tomorrow.
