english roses

Question

I live  4 hrs from Toronto On. Canada. My USDA zone
is 3 but, with two side brick walls, I think my zone
can be extended to zone 4 maybe even 5.

I am interested in David Austin's English roses.
Would I be limited to buying only those roses grown
 on their own root?

What would happen if I bought root that was grafted
onto Dr. Huey, would they not survive?

Any answer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi Sherri,
Thanx for your question.  Roses are really not in my area of expertise.  Zone 3 is probably too cold for Austin English Roses.  I have noted a zone range down to 5A which would include greater Toronto.  You might be able to get away with it with the two brick walls.  I've grown outside of my zone before it just depends how well you can create a micro-climate.  My suggestion to you is to contact your local rose society.  They will have tons of information for growing roses in your area.  You can do a search on Google.com for Rose Societies or for English Roses to find more information.  I hope this helps.
thx,
Tom
