QuestionI bought a Wood's blue aster in June last year. It did very well. Do I prune it to the ground or what this spring? I live in zone 5.
AnswerMary,
Finally a simple question! I have had some really complex questions this past few weeks.
Asters I know about because they are my very favrite fall perennials. They grow VERY quickly in the growing season.
I cut all the old stuff back now, then when they start getting huge by June or July, cut them back again. This will give the branches strength to hold up the plant when it is in full bloom.Otherwise, unless it is a dwarf Aster, the plant gets heavy and flops over. This will also use the energy to put on more and longer blooming blooms.
Heres a tip:
Try planting yellow Chrysanthemums in front of the Asters to create a gorgeous fall display and help support the Asters as well.
