Hibiscus (rose mallow) Moscheutos

Question
I live in zone 5 (Trenton ont. Canada) and my wife and I planted this Hibiscus two years ago.  The first year it not do very much. but this year it was beautifull, with very large flowers, the first flower was at least 14 inches across and it continued to bloom until the first heavy frost.my question is now that the leaves are dropping do I prune it back or leave it until spring and just prune the winter kill. Also it has really started to spread, when is the best time to move it.

Answer
Jack,
Make sure it is hardy in your area.If it has already survived one winter then you should be able to grow it continuously with no problem or special care. For added insurance of it's ability to grow well, cover the base of the plant with any type of mulch(hardwood or pine needles or composted materials.I would prune the branches now that are touching each other and just cut the height straight across about 10 inches. And that should do it. If it is growing out of it's space,I would move it now before spring,if your ground is not frozen yet.You can do this after trimming. It will be easier to move.Dig your hole first and put in fresh soil or compost(aged) then water thouroughly and mulch well. These are GORGEOUS plants that will reward you every year with very little care.Good luck in your gardening endeavors!
