transplanting a perenial

Question
Last summer I planted a drought resistant perenial I forget it's name, it produces long tube-like purple  flowers and it got way to big for the area I planted it in so I want to transplant it.  Should I wait until it's dormant or is ok to transplant it now when it is in full bloom.  Thank you!

Answer
Kathy,
It sounds like Salvia or Veronica. Wait until it is dormant, after all the blooms have faded, then dig it up and divide it with a sharp spade or edging tool into 2,3 or 4 clumps so you will have more of them and transplant wherever you like. Cut them back to about 5 inches above soil level and trim the roots before planting. Also, use fresh potting soil and water deeply. Make sure after a few days of no rain that the soil is kept moist but not wet.
Have fun in your garden this fall!
