growing Dianthus

Question
all the flowers bloomed and have died but there seem to be few flowers blooming, do I need to pick off the old blooms or will they reseed themselves?  How can I plant from seed?

Answer
Hi Loretta,
Thanx for your question.  Dianthus will reseed themselves but you can help by spreading some of the seed around yourself.  Some of the seeds should germinate this spring.  You can start some indoors this spring about 8 weeks before the last frost.  Start them by pressing them into moist but not soggy potting soil and lightly cover them with soil.  Put a thin layer of milled sphagnum moss to keep down mold.  Put the pot inside a plastic baggie and keep warm about 70-75 degrees F.  Germination should take place in less than 2 weeks.  After the seedlings have a set of true leaves gently prick them out of the soil and plant them in separate pots until after the last frost.  Put the plants outdoors in a safe place where they do not get direct sunlight or suffer extremes of temps, wind and rain for about 7-10 days.  This is called hardening off and then they should be acclimatized to be planted anywhere you like in your garden.  I  hope this helps.
Tom
