I have written before, and was told that coffee grounds are not a good source of acidity for acid loving shrubs (azaleas) but cannot remember why. A friend and I are having an argument about this. Can you tell me why again?

Barbara,
I
This is my busy season yet and it will take about 10 minutes or so to find your answer. But if you don't want to wait, here are some sites that may resolve your dispute.
Gardens Alive,Charleys Gardens and Greenhouse,Gardeners Supply,Mother Earth News or any organic garden site that don't believe in chemical applications.
If you can't find the answe to the question, write me back. I do know that they are great for compost piles.
AnswerBarbara,
I'm not sure why coffee grounds would have a negative effect, unless perhaps you use it by itself in a pot or on top of a plant too close to it's base.Coffee grounds, egg shelss, vegetable peelingsBarbara,
I'm not sure why coffee grounds would have a negative effect, unless perhaps you use it by itself in a pot or on top of a plant too close to it's base.Coffee grounds, eggshelss, vegetable peeings, sawdust leaves grass clippings. You can also buy a product to speed up the decomposition process. So, you can definately benefit
from using them in a compost with the other materials. I have not used coffee grounds on top layer of soil in a pot,but if you want to add nitrogen ,which is a
good material to mix in your compost pile. However Azaleas don't like anything close to the base of the shrub, but you can mix the grounds with potting soil first and then try it out on a plant just to test it;s effects. Make sure it
isn't around the base or "trunk" of the azalea.WATER
WELL after adding compost as a top dressing or a mix with other materials.Hope this satisfied with the answer. I also gave you a list or sources in my last email where you can go online to find the answer.
