orientalpoppies

Question
how can I grow   poppies from the pods of seeds that have collected from the centers of my poppies. I let them dry on the plants and have them in a box and would like to sow them?

Answer
Hi Ruth,
Thanx for your question.  You can sow the seeds in the area you want them togrow this fall before the first frost or you can wait until early spring.  By sowing this fall you may get some blooms next year.  If you sow in the spring you will have to wait for the next year.  Oriental poppies are hard to transplant if grown as seedlings indoors.  Not that it can't be done but most transplants will die.  Just toss the seed directly into the garden and some of them will come up next year.  I dug up a few plants and cut off 3 or 4inch pieces of the root and planted these and got plants the next year and a few bloomed.  You should wait until early fall to do root cuttings when you can find the plant.  I hope this helps.
Tom
