purple wintercreeper

Question
I have wintercreeper growing on a mound.  On the slopes it is green and vigorous, but on top it is yellowish and nearly dormant.  I have been feeding it Miracle-Gro the last few weeks without much effect.  We live in Kentucky.  My mound is of poor quality soil, but it has no problem on the slopes.  Would you have any suggestions?

Answer
On the areas that are of poor growth or no growth I would redo the soil.  Here is my soil preparation recipe.  You will have to scale down the proportions to your area needs.

First though you MUST prepare your soil. It may be pains-taking but you will see such better results from your garden, sun or shade.

This is my formula:  I have good topsoil for about 2-3" but then a lot of clay.
for every 6' x 6'sq. area:
1 bag peat moss(If you get the very large 3.cu.ft bags-only 1/2)
1 bag sand-play sand
1 bag gypsum-for aeration
1/3 bad Millorganite (an organic fertilizer found at Nurseries--and I SWEAR by it for flower beds and lawns, for lawns, put it on heavy like any fertilizer in spring and fall!-also good for lawns!))
1 bag cedar or cypress mulch-this gets tilled into the soil with all the other stuff.

Roto-til or turn into soil with shovel-at least 5"-6" in depth-more if possible, before planting. You will be AMAZED!!

I also wonder if drainage is a problem since it does well on the slopes!

Hope this helps.
