QuestionHi Tom, will it bother a plant to plant it directly into a pressure-treated wood box? Does the pressure-treating bother the plant? I want to plant grape vines over my pergola. My deck is 5 feet off the ground and so I need to plant in boxes - will I have trouble?
AnswerHi Lee,
Thanx for your question. A lot of horticulturalists don't recommend planting in pressure-treated wood boxes because there are some chemicals that could be harmful to a plant. I've seen people plant in them though and have not seen any ill effects. Was the box made to be a planter? I can't tell you if you'll have problem because I haven't had the experience myself. I can only tell you I've heard it can impair or prevent plant growth and I've also heard it does no harm. You might give the company a call that makes the box and ask them if they have any data on that. I hope this helps.
