Questioni am planning on moving my flower beds this year and i am wondering when the flowers die can i dig up the bulbs now and store them in soil and in a cool place and replant in the fall
thank U
Answer The time to dig up bulbs is later towards fall, when the leaves die back. The leaves help to feed the bulbs so that they WILL bloom the next season.
Depending on the bulb, you may also be able to divide them. Iris are the most familiar of the bulbs that should be divided when they get to bunched up.
Do to a search engine on your computer when the time comes and type in "dividing iris (or whatever type they are) bulbs". You'll get good advice on the manner of division.
If you ever bring bulbs to your land from another person's, treat the bulbs with a sulphur powder to keep the diseases away that may be in the bulbs. Also look at the bulbs to see if they are intact. If there are "bore holes" or markings, you really don't want them. The bores may come with them, that is also why you would use the sulphur powder.
Use bone meal (about 1 TBL. with each bulb) when transplanting or when planting new bulbs. It really helps them!
Now would also be a great time to prepare the new bed's soil. My rule of thumb is that 80% of your success as a gardener is the soil preparation and care!!Here is my sure fire mixture:
For every 5' x 5' area add:
2 bags of good topsoil
2 bags of compost
1 bag sand (depending on your soil type)
1/2 bag Millorganite (an organic fert. get at a local nursery)
1 bag cedar or cypress mulch-I like cypress
1 bag gypsum (for aeration)
This mixture is the best I have formulated to date and I have GREAT success with it. I always have a bunch of it premixed so when I transplant I can have that area primed!
Greatest of luck!!
