Question
Which type of hoe would you suggest for the garden?

Answer
Hi Walt.

As with most things, it depends on what you need it to do. Here's a run down on what different hoes are good for:
A draw hoe (or garden hoe) is a square bladed type with a straight edge at a right angle from the handle. It's best for chopping up soil clumps.

A claw hoe is sort of a hand cultivator on a long handle. Like the hand cultivator, the claw hoe is useful for finer soil cultivation than the draw hoe.

A heart hoe has a heart shaped blade and is useful for edging and sod removal.

A plow hoe is like a draw hoe, but with a slightly rounded blade. It does about the same thing as the draw hoe.

An action hoe is a hinged blade like a stirrup. I find it difficult to manipulate but others claim it's good for weeding.

A weeding hoe looks a bit like a hammer--it has a narrow hoe blade on one side and a split blade on the other side.

Probably my favorite tool is the long-handled cultivator, which isn't a hoe at all. It looks like a garden hoe but with bent tines instead of a solid blade. I find this one useful for grubbing out weeds and tilling the soil.

I hope this information answers your question. The good thing about all of these is that they're small tools and are useful even inside flower beds and in other small spaces.

Happy gardening!
