QuestionMy digital camera is on the fritz or I would send a picture, but it is a fairly easy plant to discribe, see if you can tell me what it is.
My brother dug it up in a field(fence row) in eastern Kansas.
I think it is a type of iris, but would like more info.
the leaves look like bearded iris, about 2-21/2 ft tall.
the roots have a very small tuber about and inch long and about a 1/2 inch around yellowish orange in color
the bloom is orange with spots like a tiger lily, but is only 2 inches across with 6 petals(with a slight space between each petal) and are in a cluster of about 6.
Help me if you can
Thanks
AnswerHi Rhonda,
Thanx for your question. I live in the KC area on the Kansas side! The plant you describe sounds like a blackberry lily (Belamcanda chinensis) and is not native to Kansas. It is a hardy plant and a member of the iris family. It must have escaped from someone's garden. They self-seed well and are easy to grow from seed. I have a bunch of them in my backyard I grew from seed. They bloom in the mid-summer for a few weeks and then the spent flowers form small seed pods which open up in the fall to display a bunch of shiny black seeds about the size of small peas (hence the name blackberry lily). It is not a lily though it is related to the iris. I hope this helps.
