QuestionI recently received my first rosebush (a knockout) for Mother's Day . I live in NE & wondering about maintainence? We have harsh winters so I need a schedule for feeding & winterizing
Answerhi
first year just make sure you do not over water. Make sure it is planted correctly,, not too deep.
Apply a small amount of a good organic rose fertilizer along with a mineral source like rust dust and then a small amount for mulch. I use azalea/gardenia mix as a mulch.
You will need to protect from winter time by covering with either hay or? Ask your local nursery what they have that you can use .
you will not need to prune much the firs winter and you will need to prune every year back to a certain level depending on size. If it is a vine type then you should let one or two grow longer every year cutting back from there.
Ask your nursery when first fertilizer application is done for your area as they are different for different regions.
Use a good organic foliar fertilizer that will help it to bloom. There are many available thru the internet.
Allow roses to bloom thru their cycle and then prune back to next leaf set when rose bud is dry. You can also pick the flowers at next leaft to put into water.
