Question
Rose Bush
I have a Red Rose Bush that is about 6 feet tall. When Winter comes, what will be the best way to protect it without cutting it down to a foot high? I want to keep it big. I planted it last spring and last Winter I didn't do anything and luckily it didnt die. I also have a Cherokee Rose Bush that has stems that are over 6 feet long and I did loose half of it last Winter. How do I protect it? I have never pruned it, I just let it grow. But I dont want to loose any more of it this Winter, as it now grows up the side of my house on a trellus. What will be the best way to protect both Rose Bushes this Winter?
AnswerHello Alisha,
My best recommendation is to remove the canes from your trellis and wrap in burlap. Then you will want to make sure the burlap is secure so is does not get blown around in the winter winds. Also, make sure the soil around the roses is kept from freezing if the ground freezes deep in your area. Straw is one of the best insulators to use.
Make sure you are protected from the thorns especially the Cherokee rose. It has fishhooks for thorns as I am sure you are aware.
Your roses look great.
