Question

Hi. My family moved in to our house over 10 years ago and Ive just started taking a more serious interest in our garden. There is a rose bush in our frot garden. This year the bush produced four beautiful blooms - the most successful year yet -- I think because we left it alone with pruning for a year and it also gets partial shade though it probably needs full sun. Would be a great help to know what kind of rose bush it is so I could look in to how to properly prune and treat it. Thanks in advance for your help! Pictures are kind of dark but really display flower colors. Let me know if you need better pictures of the whole bush.
AnswerHi Dorsey,
That sure looks like Chicago Peace. It is a hybrid tea. I would not prune it until next spring; let it grow and rebuild itself.
I suggest 1/4 cup of Epsom salt put around the plant. This will help it to put out new canes from the bottom and put 1/2 cup of Osmocote fertilizer. Water it well during the summer.
5-6 hours of sun is plenty for a rose.
You will see a huge change in your plant.
Good luck with the garden. You may want to try some roses by Kordes. They are are great disease resistant roses.
Hope that helps,
Jay
