Questionleaves on my roses are spindly and curly. Not the whole rose, just the leaves. What can I do? I live in Everett WA, just north of Seattle WA. I don't own a camera or fancy phone to take a picture so I can't Attach Image
AnswerWhen a rose plant grows thin leaves or thin curly stems, the cause is usually one of two reasons. One is that the roots have a gall on them ( not usually the reason) and so they can't get the nutrients up the canes. The other is herbicide spray. The drift from a herbicide is very very fine and it doesn't take a wind to make it drift. If you or your neighbors, have used a herbicide, then that will cause the distorted leaves. What to do depends on when the damage was done. After about 4 hours it is too late. For now I would just cut off all the thin looking leaves and even prune back the rose a few inches. Give the plant some fertilizer to help it recover. Normally if only some of the leaves are damaged, the plant will come back the next spring normally. Don't try and water the rose bush for a few days as this will drive the herbicide deeper into the soil and cause more damage.
