Pinata Climbing Roses

Question
There are so many contradictory bits of info on this rose.  I just purchased one from Gardeners' Choice, and when I asked for the zone, they said zone 4, but would suggest covering the base in the winter months.  You indicate it is a zone 6.  One report says to plant in sun another says the sun will fad the flowers.  I have a spot on the east side of my home, and would like to plant it here.  One report says it is a slow grower, up to 8', and Gardeners' Choice says it is fast growing, up to 18' long canes and 10' wide.  Help!

Answer
Roses respond differently to different climatic zones. Lets start with the good news about Pinata. This is a rose for a warm climate like Florida or California. It does very well there and will grow vigorously to about 12 feet and bloom all summer. It will however, fade in the hot midday sun so it needs to be planted where it has some shade. It is not unusual for roses with this colouring to fade quickly and there is nothing one can do about it except to shelter it from the hot sun. That is the good news.
Pinata is not a rose for areas where they get snow in the winter. It will be a slow grower, get dieback in the winter and generally not do well. It will simply die in zone 4. If your winters don't get nasty then Pinata will do well for you.
All rose growers must take garden centers advice on the basis that they have to sell plants and so there is often stretching of the facts.
