QuestionI live in Michigan(zone 6) and am very interested in planting a Rainbow Knock-Out Rose Tree. Would it survive our winter here? The recommended hardiness zones are 5-9 but I want to make sure it will survive in the ground, dont want to have to bring it indoors.
AnswerIf it was the bush form of Rainbow knock out, I would say you will have no problems. However a tree is just a stick with a modern rose setting on the top. Sitting up in the air is the problem, as the winter winds usually will dry the canes out. If it is really important to you to try this rose tree, then make sure you protect it in the winter by using bubble wrap. Wait until the weather has made the rose drop all the leaves and then place the bubble wrap all around it. Tie it closed at the top but leave the base not tied as you want the roots to be able to take up any rain water. Plus you don't want to make a greenhouse.
