QuestionI have two rose bushes in my back yard and ive noticed that they have kind of rose out of the ground. The base of the bush is popping out about 3-4 inches. Is this because they have no room under ground because they arent close to each other or any other plant. should i replant it lower or is there a right way to fix it?
AnswerThere could be a couple of reasons your rose bushes are starting to rise out of the ground. One is that they have encountered some sort of barrier with their roots. Stones or even just very hard packed soil will make the roots bunch up and push the top of the rose upwards. The other is when winds blow they will rock the rose back and forth and this can push the soil away from the base of the rose and make it look like they are coming out of the ground. If the weather is still cold where you garden and the roses are not leafing out let, then by all means re-plant them and make sure the graft or lump at the top of the roots, is planted about 4 inches under the soil. However if you garden in a warm area and the rose bushes are growing, replanting them at this time could set them back a lot. I would then just mound up soil around the base and then re-plant them in the fall when they have no leaves on them.
