PLANTING CLIMBING ROSES

Question
HOW DO YOU PLANT CLIMBING ROSES. WHAT DO YOU PUT INTO THE HOLE TO HELP START THE GROWTH.

Answer
Because a climbing rose is going to be a larger plant than a bush rose, it will need a bigger hole. If you dig a 2 foot wide by 2 foot deep, that will last for the rose's lifetime. If the soil is dry, fill the hole up with water to make sure the surrounding soil will be damp. If your soil is sandy then adding a bag of potting soil helps and also mix in a 2 cups of bonemeal because bonemeal takes a long time to break down and so the rose roots will have something to feed on. Rose roots really don't need to be stimulated with fertilizer because the new frail little feeder roots can be damaged by the chemicals. Plant the bud union (where the roots and the canes join) below the soil surface about a few inches. Just press don the soil all around the plant to make sure it is not wobbling and water it well. It is always a good idea to put a mulch of some kind all around the base as roses love to have cool, damp roots in the heat of the summer. In the spring give it some rose fertilizer and water it well to encourage lots of new feeder roots. Don't prune for at least three years . Simply guide the new growth where you want it to grow. You won't get a lot of flowers for at least three years and then it will bloom as it should.
