Roses Didnt Bloom This Year

Question
QUESTION: I have had two climbing roses for over ten years.  They have always bloomed with abundance, however this year they just grew (well I might add) but without budding and or blooming.  I live in Ann Arbor  MI.  Do you have any ideas as to why they didn't bloom and/or suggestions to insure that they bloom next year?

ANSWER: There is usually only one reason why a climbers doesn't bloom when it is growing well and is healthy. Too much nitrogen encourages strong growth and there is  no vigour left over to make flowers, which takes the most vigour of all. Stop fertilizing your climber and just give it water and you will see some flower buds next spring.

QUESTION: I haven't used any fertilizer, and my soil is not high in nitrogen.  Any other suggestions?

Answer
Then it could be the Rose Midge. This insect lays it's eggs at the base of the young flower buds and the young hatch and damaged the buds. You can see the tiny pin hole at the base of a rose bud.
The only other thing I can think of is that it has rose galls around the base of the climber. These are growths which are small or can be the size of a golf ball. It is not unusual for a climber to not flower one year after doing well before.  I really wouldn't worry as the climber should sort the problem out itself.
