QuestionMy rose bush for the last two years has stopped blooming. It will bud, but instead of flowering a bulb will appear, The bulb does have viable seeds in it so, my percxeption is when the plant buds, it for some reason thinks it has been pollenated at forgoes the bloom and goes straight to seeding. Just a stab in the dark. I live in North texas, this is not a climbing Rose, the soil is good, I haven't fertilized in years, and the plant is near the house on the northwest side.
Thank you for any advice-really hate to have to pull it up.
AnswerIf a rose hip appears where a flower is supposed to be, then the rose has flowered. The flower may have not lasted for more than a day, but it is impossible for a rose to make a hip without flowering. The hip is actually the base of the flower or the ovary and that is where the seeds are. You say the seeds are viable so I am assuming that you have planted some seeds and they grew and produced a flower. Is that correct? The routine for making a rose flower that hasn't for a long time, is to cut it back hard, give it any type of rose fertilizer and place a mulch of some kind all around the base. Plus water it well for the season and this will start the rose flowering.
