history or rose

Question
What type of rose would the English national flower be, it being adopted as such in the mid 15th cent during the War of the Roses, and would it be red, the Lancastrian colour, as they were the ultimate victors all be it through the House of Tudor?  Thank you.

Answer
The national flower of England is simply a red rose. As you have said, it was adopted in The War of the Roses.  Henry Vll chose the rose when he got married to Elizabeth of York. It was he that selected a symbol of the union by the red rose as he was a Lancastrian. In pictures the red is always superimposed on the white Rose of York. The Lancastrian rose is actually rosa Gallica officials and the Rose of York is rosa Alba.
