Roses do not bloom

Question
I live in Ohio near Akron.  I have several rose bushes that are 15 years old and they do not bloom any longer.  They are in partial shade.  What can I do or are the bushes too old?

Answer
Roses bushes can live for many years if just watered and feed normally so 15 years is a young rose. However, roses do need at least 6 hours of full sun to bloom normally. If they are in partial shade they will bloom but will not have perfect flowers and not as many if they were in the sun. If the shade has become darker, then this would be the reason they are not blooming. If possible try and give them more sunshine. Also if you haven't pruned them back hard for a few years, sometimes a good pruning activates them into flowering. I would cut them back by at least a third. Don't be fussy on how to prune,  just cut them right across the bush. Give them some rose fertilizer and you should see them bloom. If they don',t then they have too much shade and will only grow canes and leaves but not bloom.
