Questionmy roses are budding but shriveling before they open or opening slightly and not fully blooming, when we first planted this 6 weeks ago, had beautiful flowers and blooms. Live in NJ, northeast, had rain, also sprinklers hit the bush every other day in a mist shower
AnswerIf the roses were doing fine when you planted them, then the problem with the new flowers not opening properly, is probably due to something that is effecting them only, not the whole plant. If water or rain gets onto a rose bloom when it is just starting to open and the weather is cool in the nights, this can cause the new flowers to rot a little and this will damage the bloom and stop it from opening out the way it should. Even if the water gets on the rose buds and the weather is fine at night, if it doesn't dry off before night time this can also cause a problem. Some roses are more prone to getting problems when water sits on them than other roses but all roses really don't like water on their blooms because it gets between the petals and can't dry out. This causes botrytis or a mould. So water on the leaves is fine, just not the buds or opening flowers.
