QuestionMy wife and i bought two different color rose bushes (1yellow 1 white) a few years ago. Two years later they are RED why is that ? I want to replant 1 of them elsewhere in yard. How deep and wide would the root system be on a plant (approx. 8 years old)Can i do it without killing it ?
AnswerAll roses are budded onto an understock, which is a rose that gives them more vigour. This understock is called Dr. Huey and when the top modern rose dies either during the cold of a winter or just simply dies, then the understock takes over and starts to grow. Dr. Huey is a red climber, so what has happened is your modern rose has died and it is the undertsock Dr. Huey that is now growing and blooming. You will not be able to get the original roses to grow back again.
