Question
Sepal Tip Burn
Dear Lynette,
I am a rose consultant in Zimbbabwe Africa and I have been experiencing some problem with tip burn on our roses. The roses are grown in Greenhouses with fixed vents.
The tips of the heads on the sepals are going a purpilish colour then dying back as the flower opens.
I am also noticing this on the Hypericum.
I have attached a couple of images. Any help would be most appreciated
AnswerMy expertise is mainly in the growing of garden roses but I have come across this problem before. From my research, it was caused by sulphur dioxide pollution which when left on too long, caused the sepals only to turn purple and die back. Actually even fumes from most heaters will cause the same re-action. I am assuming here that you use a heater. The research said that the sepals will be the first area of the rose to be effected by chemical fumes of any kind on a low level. Even chlorine the water causes a problem. If that is not the answer then I am sure you are aware of downy mildew but this causes mainly the leaves to turn a purplish colour and twist. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
