QuestionSomething or insect is deleafing our two Lady Banks rose bushes. This is our 2nd year since we planted the bushes and last summer it would leaf out and then there would be no leaves! This year we have been spraying insecticidal soap which seemed to be doing a good job as they were leafing out beautifully and even had some blooms - today we go out and the blooming bush had no blooms and leaves were gone. Any ideas what may be causing this?
AnswerCaterpillars can do a good job of denuded a rose as well as other insects. The only way you can tell is to try and catch one and have it identified. Your soap spray may have killed the bugs in their young stage but has no effect of the adults. The Ortho company puts out some good insecticide which are not nasty ones such as Ortho's Bug B Gon. The fact that the flowers are gone, I wonder if they could be Japanese Beetles? These can be found at the base in the soil in the evening. Also what about a group of birds that flock on the tree and eat the leaves and flowers. The fact that the flowers are also eaten is a good clue to what is causing the problem.
