QuestionHi, I have a rose bush or climber. It was given to me as a gift but came with no information. I planted it in late summer and now, late Sept., I don't know what to do with it. How can I tell if it's a climber or a bush? Thanks.
AnswerIt is difficult to give advice on how to care for a rose in the winter if I don't know where you garden as different areas require different advice. But in regards to whether it is a bush or a climber, usually a climbing rose will throw up a couple of tall 4 foot canes the first year but a bush rose will grow only abut 2 feet the first year. This is just a rough guess as some bush roses are very vigorous and make a lot of tall growth like a climber. The next year will tell if it is a climber as the new canes will continues to keep getting taller but the bush rose will put out side growths from their new canes.
