QuestionI have a double grafted rose tree I want to plant before witer I am in zone 7.The bud uninon seems to be about 20 inches up on tree and I think it should be planted 2 inches deep. That would mean I have to dig a hole about 30-" deep to plant and about 20" wide. Why would the bud union be so far up on plant, thanks walt
AnswerTo make a rose tree, they plant a wild Rugosa rose and let it grow to about 3 feet tall, taking off all the side shoots. Then they bud a modern rose on the top. This is why the bud union sits at the top of the rose tree. Your rose tree should come through the winter in your zone. If you are concerned, some gardeners use large bubble wrap and place it around the top or modern part of the rose tree. You do this when all the leaves have fallen off and there is no chance of any warmer weather coming. Bubble wrap can make the top like a greenhouse and encourage growth so you wait until the weather has made the rose go dormant.
