young roses & winter

Question
QUESTION: I planted some very young double delights in June of this year.  they were only about 6" high at the time & haven't gotten a whole lot bigger but look healthy. I'm worried about them making it through our upcoming Ohio winter.  what's the best thing to do?

ANSWER: Double Delight is not a very hardy rose. You have a couple of options. One is to wait until they have dropped their leaves and have gone dormant and then dig them up, put them in a pot and place them in an unheated garage or somewhere where they can spend the winter without freezing. The other is to make sure you pile soil, compost or any kind of mulch all around them so that only a couple of inches of canes are sticking out at the top. This should protect them through the winter. However Double Delights are not really hardy hybrid teas so they make get frozen over the winter..

QUESTION: someone had suggested to me to cover the exposed canes with a mason jar to retain the suns heat.  will this help or hurt?

Answer
Rose go through and survive a winter by drawing down the sap in their canes so that the canes then become tough and hard and the cold will not freeze any liquid in them. If you place a jar over the roses you will be creating a greenhouse effect and the canes will not only be burnt by the winter sun, they will also be encouraged to grow because the glass will heat up and when they grow the cold will then kill them. Placing glass over a rose at anytime is not a good idea.
